How do we help students optimise their OLNA scores?
Albany Tutoring will focus on how to approach the test, teaching answering techniques, how to increase the probability of selecting the right answer, develop critical thinking and and test checking techniques. We share the common question types and how to prepare for similar questions.
OLNA program
We provide a three-week intensive program of two hours per week:
Week 1- Writing test focus. We provide a structured way to respond to the writing prompts, work on their writing structure and that they are using literary techniques. Students receive a toolkit to effectively incorporate literary techniques into their responses. In the second part of the tutoring session, we work on grammar and punctuation. Students receive a no-nonsense checklist to ensure their writing is grammatically correct.
Week 2- Numeracy test focus. We teach the students how to use their existing mental maths strategies to effectively respond to the maths questions. We then spend one hour in twenty-minute blocks reteaching the students with the year 9 core Maths program of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. Test questions are provided to assess progress.
Week 3-Reading test focus. We teach this by doing reading fluency and effectiveness strategies and then providing additional practice. We teach implied and explicit meaning and how context, tone, affects meaning. The full practices replicate what the students view on the day.
All lessons are supported by:
- Detailed lesson notes.
- Access to all learning resources are available for download through our Tutoring Software
- Weekly emailed report.
- Detailed feedback, marking and critique of test trials.
Why is OLNA so important?
Without completing OLNA, students cannot show that they meet the minimum level of competence in numeracy and literacy to meet the demands of daily life. Further, they cannot meet the requirement to achieve a Western Australia Certificate of Education. This means they are not eligible for many tertiary education courses.
What our students achieve!
- In 2021, 80% of students, passed an OLNA test they have previously failed.
- In 2022, 100% of students passed their SAT test to get into university after they did not get the requisite ATAR score to get in through their ATAR Score. A parent put up a review on our Facebook page in April 2022 detailing their success.
- In 2022, Semester 1, 75% of the student we worked with, passed an OLNA test they have previously failed.
