Preparation is key to succeeding in essays! - Albany Tutoring

You must prepare before writing an essay. The markers can ask you only a limited number of general questions. They must be broad enough that the students can write five paragraphs on them or three pages. So you can be prepared for any question!

Highlight important sections. As you read, use a highlighter to mark key ideas and passages that are critical. Use different colours for each type of information: one for quotes from sources and another for your own notes and questions. This will help you remember what’s essential later on when it comes time to study or write essays. Just be sure not to get too carried away with it! You don’t want every single word highlighted!

Develop a clear and concise thesis statement that reflects the main point of the essay. This must be included in the introduction. It provides a road map for the reader to follow throughout the essay.

Use specific examples and evidence to support your arguments, which will make your writing more convincing and engaging.

Improve the effectiveness of your writing by using active voice instead of passive voice, as this will make your writing more direct and engaging.

Write questions or ideas as they come up while reading. When you review these notes later on, they will become useful reference points.
